FIRST PLACE WINNER IN TWO CATEGORIES

We are happy to announce that Fundación Senderos with its project Biochar and Energy for Sequestration of CO2 in Soils is the winner of two prizes at the 9th annual edition of Premios Verdes, the most relevant sustainability festival in Ibero-America.
Each year, this event and its awards give visibility and create networks among the best 500 social and environmental projects in the region. Moreover, the event supports the green economy by showcasing regional initiatives in eight categories (six of which are subdivided to form a total of eighteen subcategories) in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set forth in 2015 by the United Nations General Assembly and intended to be achieved by 2030.
This year’s Green Awards participants included 2,522 initiatives from countries across Europe, America, and Africa. Over the course of several months, an International Jury evaluated these projects in depth with the involvement of experts and organizations that included Conservation International, National Geographic, the UN Development Program and the UN Environment Program. Evaluators (Premios Verdes' Jury) rated candidates' work with two international divisions: The Technical Commission (first selection of projects) and the Annual Jury (final selection after examining and interviewing each of three finalists in each subcategory).
Winners were announced during Sustainability Week, an event held in late April 2022 at the University of Miami where talks were held with international exponents, ministers of environment of Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Uruguay, Costa Rica, United Kingdom, the Vice Minister of the Dominican Republic, and the host city's Mayor, Francis X. Suárez.
At the Awards Gala on Sunday, April 24, Paul S. Anderson, PhD accepted two of the top prizes as the technical advisor for our Venezuelan project (Biochar and Energy for CO2 Sequestration in Soils). This project is led by Daniel Velásquez, President of Fundacion Senderos, an NGO based in Mérida in the rural community of La Mucuy. The project was the first ever to win in two categories in one year: Clean Energy and Sustainable Production.
We are pleased and honored by this important recognition of our work and its importance in the realm of efforts for adaptation and mitigation of the greatest risk humanity has faced, Climate Change.
Finally, our most sincere gratitude is reserved for the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Venezuela Small Grants Programme which has supported our efforts for significantly scaling the implementation of this technology within our community in the Tropical Andes in Venezuela, one of the most biodiverse places in the world.

Biochar and Energy for Sequestration of CO2 in Soils
Nos complace anunciar que Fundación Senderos con su proyecto Biocarbón y Energía para el Secuestro de CO2 en Suelos es ganador de dos premios en la 9° edición anual de los Premios Verdes, el festival de sustentabilidad más relevante de Iberoamérica. Cada año, este evento y sus premios dan visibilidad y crean redes entre los mejores 500 proyectos sociales y ambientales de la región. Además, el evento apoya la economía verde al mostrar iniciativas regionales en ocho categorías (seis de las cuales se subdividen para formar un total de dieciocho subcategorías) en consonancia con los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS) establecidos en 2015 por la Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas y que se pretende lograr para 2030.
Este año los participantes de Premios Verdes incluyeron 2,522 iniciativas de países de Europa, América y África. En el transcurso de varios meses, un jurado internacional evaluó estos proyectos en profundidad con la participación de expertos y organizaciones que incluyeron a Conservación Internacional, National Geographic, el Programa de las Naciones Unidas para el Desarrollo y el Programa de las Naciones Unidas para el Medio Ambiente. Los evaluadores (Jurado de Premios Verdes) calificaron el trabajo de los candidatos con dos divisiones internacionales: La Comisión Técnica (primera selección de proyectos) y el Jurado Anual (selección final después de examinar y entrevistar a cada uno de los tres finalistas en cada subcategoría).
Los ganadores fueron anunciados durante la Semana de la Sostenibilidad, evento realizado a finales de abril de 2022 en la Universidad de Miami donde se sostuvieron charlas con exponentes internacionales, ministros de medio ambiente de Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, Panamá, Uruguay, Costa Rica, Reino Unido, el Viceministro de República Dominicana, y el alcalde de la ciudad anfitriona, Francis X. Suárez.
Durante la Gala final, realizada el domingo 24 de abril, el Dr. Paul S. Anderson recibió dos de los principales premios como asesor técnico de Fundación Senderos, una ONG basada en la comunidad rural de La Mucuy, Mérida-Venezuela. Y liderada por Daniel Velásquez (LinkedIn). El proyecto fue el primero en ganar en dos categorías en un año: Energía Limpia y Producción Sostenible.
Nos complace y honra este importante reconocimiento a nuestro trabajo y su importancia en el ámbito de los esfuerzos de adaptación y mitigación del mayor riesgo que ha enfrentado la humanidad, el Cambio Climático.
Finalmente, nuestro más sincero agradecimiento está reservado para el Programa de Pequeñas Donaciones de Venezuela del Fondo para el Medio Ambiente Mundial (GEF, por sus siglas en inglés) con quienes hemos comenzado a implementar a una escala significativa esta tecnología de Biochar & Energía dentro de los andes tropicales de Venezuela, uno de los lugares con mayor biodiversidad del planeta.
